Even on Black Friday, we dish out the best online marketing news stories in our Five Things You Might Have Missed list. Tricky Twitter innovations, a Butterball-bashing viral hit and so much more are piled high on today’s plate. So pull up a chair and dig into our leftover-free buffet!

1.) Serve with Gin & Juice: Topping the list this week is a ridiculous-yet-viral treat of online video creation from Hot Pockets. “Pocket Like It’s Hot” is a music video style commercial featuring Snoop Dogg and a parody of his 2004 hit “Drop it Like It’s Hot.” With lyrics like “When the craving’s got a hold of you… Pocket like it’s hot… Pocket like it’s hot” and a video filled with hilarious hip hop swagger, it’s hard to believe it took Hot Pockets this long to use Snoop as a spokesperson. The timing must’ve been just right, however. The clip has already racked up over 6 million views in just under a week.

2.) Picture this: If you missed the rollout of yet another cool Twitter upgrade this week, you’re not alone. Fact is, Twitter seems to release some sort of nifty app or innovation nearly every week. This week, the company announced that it would now offer an image search which allows users to search for hashtagged images, signaling the brand’s bid to be considered a social image sharing network, too (a la Instagram). For Twitter marketing specialists, this makes finding image-rich tweets even easier and opens the doors for creative photo-centric campaigns.

3.) Black Friday Bungle: Every year, at least one big brand royally screws up an online Black Friday promotion. This year, the title for Biggest Online Marketing Screw-ups goes to Sears. Thanks largely to a time zone setting disaster, Sears had to send thousands of “oops!” emails to its early shoppers, who thought they could get their hands on a 32-inch TV for just $97 bucks and before Black Friday. Only problem is that most Sears didn’t have the TVs yet, leaving online customers in the lurch until their transactions could get cancelled, which could take days. All was made worse by some bad social media PR which tried to clear up the mess but just made people more angry. The whole fiasco is a great reminder for marketers to keep holiday deals super easy and to use social media to actually be helpful and sympathetic.

4.) Side Dish of ‘Mercy:’ WARNING! Do not watch the ButterballAbuse.com video that’s been going around if you are sensitive to violence against animals. Yet this viral campaign strongly illustrates how powerful online videos can be when perfectly timed. The clip, produced by Mercy for Animals, has received major national notice and jump-started a new discussion about animal compassion.

5.) Sandy Stories: We round out this week’s list with the amazing way that Hurricane Sandy survivors are using storytelling app Backspaces. Backspaces is an app that inspires users to click photos and tell the stories of their lives as they unfold. Sandy Stories have popped up by the thousands on Backspaces, with photos of folks helping out communities affected by devastating storm. It’s an inspiring trend to see non-profits and regular old folk alike using smartphone sharing for the collective (feel) good of mankind.

After taking a week off to shovel pie into our faces, Brandsplat’s Five Things You Might Have Missed is back! We’ve got the latest in Mitt media news, cool Euro viral ads — even some chocolately goodness. So without any further delay, let’s do this thang!

1.) You’ve got your website in my peanut butter: What’s the perfect accompaniment to chocolate beer? A chocolate website, of course! Portugal’s No. 1 beer brand Sagras called upon some world-class chocolatiers to make the world’s first 100 percent chocolate-designed website! And we thought our custom content was tasty.

2.)Tumbl’ing out of fashion: Here’s another high-profile example of “what not to do” as a digital director. Tumblr’s notoriously snooty fashion director, Rich Tong, was given the heave-ho after brands and agencies complained about his alleged penchant to play favorites, ignoring the emails of longtime Tumblr supporters and downright rudeness. Tong learned the hard way that even in the digital world, a stank attitude is never in fashion.

3.) Lucky Martini: We had to put this “Luck is an Attitude” video from Smirnoff Martini on this week’s list for several reasons. First, the split screen of the same guy choosing different paths with wildly different results is brilliant. Second, the message — and the Andrews Sisters’ song — are both genius. And lastly, the video features casting contest winner Yuri Buzzi, whose rise to Internet fame is something of a fairy tale itself. Lucky us!

4.) Marketing Mitt: Love or hate Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, you can’t fault the guy for having the digital gravitas and smarts to take on the seemingly unstoppable Obama campaign. Team Romney made headlines this week for a television ad that critics called deceitful. And yet, compared to Gingrich and Cain, Romney still manages to be a more marketable candidate. That’s a true testament to the power of his brand — even if the man himself is less than amazing.

5.) Squishy Robots: Amid political sniping and corporate misbehaving, it’s nice to stumble on a story that champions innovation. With that being said, please enjoy the wonder of squishy starfish-like robots.

Just because we love you, we’ve gathered up the best of the best and packaged them in a shiny little package we like to call “Five Things You Might Have Missed.”

1.) Our Number One About Number Two: We hate to give even more publicity to Give-a-Shit.org but this website and the groan-inducing video that accompanies it is either a brilliant take on social media crowd sourcing for non-profit or cynicism-meets-activism at its all-time worst. Either way, the campaign, which asks followers to “give a shit” about causes close to them, is subtly fighting apathy while using social media to get big-time attention.

2.) “LOL and Lose” is a Win: The advergame has gotten a giant shot in the arm thanks to Facebook and Twitter this year, but this game from Frijj milkshakes relies on awesomely bad YouTube videos. Players of the game are pitted against one another to see who cracks up first upon watch YouTube video hilarity. First one to laugh loses, but Frijj scores a win for this inventive and funny game.

3.) Horsemaning is Put Out to Pasture: The folks over at Gawker called for media professionals to stop covering every little Internet craze like horsemaning, owling and cone-ing. We agree. The goofy charm wore off and once Hoda and Kathie Lee have covered it, it’s officially over.

4.) Barbrachino: File this one under bizarre branding synergy… We were surprised when we stepped into the local Starbucks this week to find out the place had gone bonkers for Babs. That’s right, everybody’s favorite legal speed dealer and everybody’s favorite gay icon have teamed up for wacky cross-promotion fun, including an exclusive web concert for Barbra Streisand fans. Not only does this unique pairing signal the gravitas of the emerging Starbucks Digital Network, but the huge response cements that Streisand is still an iconic celebrity brand.

5.) Sexism Takes the Wheel: Finally, we pulled up to the bumper of a positively misogynistic vintage television commercial for Goodyear Polyglas tires. The laughable yet just plain wrong copy about women drivers is listworthy for showing that when it comes to car commercials, we really have come a long way, baby.

It’s Friday and time once again for our weekly list of Five Things You Might Have Missed!

  1. Give Mom the Gift of Twitter: Skip the Kindle or that new bottle of perfume. According to the fine folks at Twitter, what mom really needs is a Twitter tutorial this Mother’s Day. While we’re not sure how many mamas would love this gift idea, this very convincing video makes the list for being the quintessential social media Mother’s Day promotion.
  2. Cooler than a Blizzard: Is it just us, or did Dairy Queen become a quirky, hip brand overnight? The old-timey side of this country road soft serve palace has reinvented its image thanks in part to a series of entertainingly strange Internet videos. In addition to reminding us how much we love a Peanut Buster Parfait, the ads are silly, watchable fun.
  3. Charles Shultz is Spinning in His Grave: But we’re snickering at Peanutweeter, the new blog that marries real life tweets with drawings from classic Peanut cartoons. This makes our list not just because we love both Snoopy and Twitter, but because we’re kind of jealous we didn’t think of it first.
  4. Raising Money for Moms: To Mama with Love is an innovative and smart global digital art project just in time for the holiday. We love the trend of using social media and art to raise funds for a good cause, and that’s exactly what this site does. By making e-cards and sharing stories about mom, users also have the chance to raise money for mothers around the world.
  5. What the Schweppes?!: This European commercial for Schweppes features super glamorous Uma Thurman vamping it up for the beverage company. Yet this weird and tragically unfunny ad makes the list just for being so “WTF”. Apparently, web viewers feel the same way as the spot has more than 100,000 hits.

Friday is here, which means it is time for another high-flying, stair-climbing, sugar-coated edition of Five Things You Might Have Missed!

1.) Cold Beer Here: The Twitter Beer guy from Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners baseball, tops our list for sheer DIY digital marketing genius. @MSbeervendor is saving himself trips up and down the treacherous steps and saving beer drinkers time by having customers tweet their location. It’s Twitter marketing at its finest and good old-fashioned ingenuity.

2.) Flipping for Klip: Watching the video mapping videos by Klip Collective is a mind-blowing experience that almost makes you forget you’re watching advertising. As the creators of video mapping, Klip is turning any flat surface into a video canvas. Cool to look at for sure — and even cooler to imagine the possibilities for the future of outdoor and ambient advertising.

3.) A Bird’s Eye View: The Raptor Resource Project hatched a creative way to get people personally involved with its mission to save falcons, eagles, hawks and owls. With BirdCams, viewers get an intimate look at the daily lives of birds of prey. Last week, a real life nature soap opera unfolded as thousands tuned in to see a Decorah eagle care for its newborn chicks while waiting for the third egg to hatch.

4.) Candy Gone Crazy: The world of sweet treats has been delivering big time viral video weirdness lately. From Skittle’s frisky kitty to Sarah Silverman making out with a unicorn for Juicy Fruit, candy makers have also become hit video makers. Our latest favorite is Dragee, the Zen-filled glutton for punishment for Mentos.

5.) Thrown for a Loop: Drivers in Bogata, Columbia, saw their childhood come to life when a giant replica of Hot Wheel’s signature loop was put up on a freeway. Hot Wheels has been all about cool outdoor ads lately and this one is no exception.
