Twitter marketing ingests magic mushrooms, Apple gets a mini-buzz, Bond comes out of a vending machine and oh-so-much more in this week’s edition of Five Things You Might Have Missed!
.) Shrunken Apples: Perhaps you missed the massive fanfare over the new iPad Mini that happened nearly 2 weeks ago. Maybe it passed you by because, unlike Apple product announcements of the past, this one was also mini in the excitement it generated. Sure, the teeny tablet is expected to sell out when it hits stores this week… but it’s hard not to notice how ho-hum the overall reaction has been. Meant to directly compete with smaller tablets like the Kindle Fire, iPad Mini makes our list for truly marking a new era in Apple product release events. Still a powerful brand — but one in transition, Apple is always a valuable teacher when it comes to PR and digital engagement.
.) Fro Sho: Want an unusual look at the power of blogging and the discussions it can generate? Then this piece about white afro wig wearing blogger Michelle Joni Lapidos from The New Yorker is a can’t-miss. Lapidos is a former Vogue intern who donned the wig to simply experience life differently and proceeded to write about it in a blog entitled Before and Afro. The blog got mainstream media attention and drew both comments of support and outrage from readers. A part-time social media freelancer, Lapidos and her blog have exploded, creating an unexpected conversation about race, freedom of speech and blogging.
.) A Real Fungi: Psychedelic-themed pizza joint Mellow Mushroom took the idea of Twitter followers literally in a new campaign which sent a large and presumably high mushroom out on the streets. The mushroom actually followed back real Twitter followers of the brand on foot. The result is a clever and headline-grabbing Twitter marketing effort.
.) Double Oh Awesome: To help promote the new James Bond film, Coke Zero set up a high-tech vending machine where daring participants not only got a calorie-free beverage but a chance for tickets to the movie. This super cool viral video features some fun action sequences, a great version of the iconic James Bond theme as well as some clever brand synergy.
.) Stuffed Animal Dance Party: Finally, we wrap up our list with a commercial from IKEA entitled “Playing with My Friends.” This whimsical music video-style ad is a hit around the globe and features kids having a blast with each other and their favorite toys which have come to life and joined the party. IKEA is good at smile-inducing online video creation and this spot does exactly that.
