Hello Friday! Since you’re here already, it must mean one thing: It’s time once again for another edition of our Five Things You Might Have Missed list!
.) A Quick Refresher: All the most recent numbers tell us one thing — email marketing is here to stay and bigger than ever. So this must-have list from Marketing Pilgrim tops our list for pointing out email marketing campaigns in the right direction.
.) And the Award for Awkward Product Placement Goes to: Royal Caribbean crashed the Tonys with a clunky and downright odd musical branded segment featuring Harvey Fierstein. If you didn’t watch the Tonys, you might have missed this truly weird benchmark in branding news.
.) Adidas Calls Action: Part real-life Bourne Identity mixed with Run, Lola, Run, Adidas has come up with one of the most inventive and clever videos we’ve ever seen for running shoes. Kidnapped participants are dropped in different places around France and put on different missions which involve running long distances. Adidas took a risk by taking its shoe out of an athletic realm for a commercial but this one paid off.
.) For Tweet’s Sake: When, oh when will we ever learn that not everybody should send tweets for a highly-publicized campaign? Apparently not this week. The Swedish tourism board set out to have normal citizens tweet about the great things to do in Sweden. Super Twitter marketing idea — unless one of your tweeters is a nutjob who likes to chirp anti-semitic tweets and crazy ramblings. Oops. The tweeter was quickly silenced and Sweden, which wanted PR for tourism, gained notoriety for all the wrong reasons.
.) Party Under the Sea: And finally, we love when marketers go completely over the top for a viral campaign, so when TechnoMarine designed and built a real-life underwater nightclub to advertise its watches, we couldn’t help but applaud. It’s one of those totally expensive and excessive spots that makes viewers wish the nightclub in the commercial was a real place.
